Birthing Biomechanics

In March 2024, I completed specialist training in Birthing Biomechanics with Shellie Poulter (The Serenity Doula). This workshop deepened my knowledge of how a baby’s journey through the pelvis is influenced by anatomy, movement, and positioning, and how we can support the birthing body to work with – rather than against – the natural process.

During the course, I explored:

  • Anatomy & Physiology – understanding the structure of the pelvis and how the baby rotates, descends, and finds their way through.

  • Station, Rotation & Orientation – recognising baby’s position and how it impacts labour progress.

  • Pregnancy Support & Optimal Positioning – practical advice to encourage space and balance before labour begins.

  • Labour Progress Strategies – techniques and positions to support when labour slows or stalls, and how to respond appropriately at different stages.

  • Hands-on Tools – positions, massage, harmonics, and movements to encourage comfort and progress.

  • Epidural Adaptations – ways to support mobility, positioning, and effective labour even with reduced movement.

  • Stage-specific Support – recognising which positions can help or hinder at different times, and why.

This training allows me to support birthing people with a deeper awareness of how small adjustments in movement, posture, and positioning can make a big difference. My goal is always to bring knowledge, calm guidance, and practical techniques that help birth unfold as smoothly as possible.

The knowledge and techniques from this training are integrated into my antenatal and birth packages, providing invaluable tools to support comfort, progress, and a more positive birthing experience.
